Abstract

This research undertakes a comprehensive Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of two significant academic libraries in Egypt: the new Central Library at Cairo University and the 6 October University Library. Utilizing a robust mixed-method approach comprising user surveys, semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and environmental assessments, the study evaluates user satisfaction and building performance concerning comfort, functionality, accessibility, sustainability, and space utilization. Findings indicate high overall satisfaction; however, certain critical areas were identified for improvement. These areas include enhancing site accessibility, refining furniture ergonomics for prolonged use, improving acoustic comfort within collaborative spaces, and upgrading availability and accessibility of essential support services such as photocopying facilities and technology access. The research offers actionable recommendations to guide future library designs, aiming to optimize user experience, operational effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. Ultimately, this study highlights the necessity for regular and systematic implementation of POE to ensure continuous alignment with evolving user expectations, supporting enhanced academic performance and research productivity.
